Private Universities by State

There are almost five thousand private universities and colleges in the United States. Some of these schools are private and non-profit organizations, while others are private and for-profit institutions. Most of the liberal arts colleges are private universities. When choosing a college, you should make sure that the school is accredited. If you attend a non-accredited school, then your degree is not formally recognized. The eight Ivy League universities are private universities, including Princeton University, Harvard University and Yale University. These are some of the oldest colleges in the U.S. as well.
