The path to a doctoral degree is first a bachelor’s degree, and then a master’s degree. Next, the doctoral programs take about five years for the average student to complete. A publishable thesis or dissertation must be completed before the doctorate degree is granted. A doctorate is the highest degree that can be obtained in the U.S. educational school system.
